Om Kerstin Hamilton

Kerstin Hamilton is a photography-based visual artist living in Gothenburg. Her research project Exploring Experimental Documentary is developed as part of the PhD program at the Valand Academy.

Hamilton is interested in how materialities and processes can be caught using a camera, exploring the photographer’s reach both physically and ethically. Exploring Experimental Documentary started off in 2015 as 1) an aspiration to frame, examine and contextualise current trends within contemporary documentary photography and 2) an artistic investigation into sites of nanotechnology. The research is carried out through interdisciplinary collaborations with natural scientists in the field of nanotechnology. It is an exploration of the (micro)scopic, architectural, economic and human landscapes of science laboratories, connecting molecules to larger societal structures. Terms such as choreography, representation and speculation are highlighted in this investigation of nano technological environments, making links between nano technology and documentary photography.

In order for us to experience the nano worlds, we have to image and imagine the nanoscale particles – representations are our only link to these miniature landscapes. In this research project, nanotechnological laboratories are to an extent regarded as metaphors to discuss questions of representation and photography. Using the laboratory both physically and as a symbol, the level of abstraction involved in any form of photography is made explicit.

The dissertation maps out experimental approaches within contemporary documentary photography and discusses the relation between documentary, photography, art and politics, ethics and representation. Further, the research project explores – both visually and theoretically – whether feminist science scholars Karen Barad and Donna Haraway’s concepts 'diffraction' and 'situated knowledges can provide useful and up-to-date entries into contemporary documentary discourses. The research also concerns the potential of photography in relation to “the real”. How can photography be used to engage with the times where we find ourselves? Can we trust the representations? Does it matter?

Previous works by Hamilton include ethnographically inspired projects, tracing global capital flows and labour practices in a Sri Lankan fishing village and in a Swedish mining community, as well as charting the routines at a maternity hospital in Dublin.

One of the main outcomes of the research so far is the film Zero Point Energy (2016) which was part of The New Human exhibition at Moderna Museet in Stockholm and Malmö. The research has also been presented at Art Initiative, Stockholm School of Economics and Chalmers University of Technology, at Vetenskapsfestivalen, as a Mobile Exhibition (aimed at youth in Västra Götalandsregionen) and Tekniska Museet among other venues.
