About Eva La Cour

Eva la Cour is a Danish visual artist and researcher with a background in fine arts as well as visual anthropology. She works with audio-visual and spatial forms of montage and display, performance and text, always negotiating with her surroundings. As such her work reflects a general interest in skilled visions, mediation and epistemology, which she particularly has investigated in relation to landscapes of narratives and raw materials in High Arctic terrains.

At Valand Academy of Art Eva la Cour is a teacher and doctoral candidate with the practice-based artistic research project The Figure of the Guide: Mediating the Open Terrain.

More on the research project:

The Figure of the Guide: Mediating the Open Terrain is a research project that investigates the mediating agency of customary geopolitical, geohistorical and geoaesthetic approaches to the Arctic region. Approaching the Arctic as a field of concerns situated in time, in disciplines, in concepts and in maps rather than in empirically distinctive localities, the Arctic is regarded as a political body that operates and is given agency through particular practices of navigation, description and depiction. As a mode of investigating this agency, the doctoral research particularly reflects upon the guiding functioning of situated practices in the actual terrain on the Arctic Archipelago of Svalbard.

In contrast to most other places in the Arctic region, no indigenous population has ever lived on Svalbard. Anchored in fieldwork on this archipelago, situated halfway between the northern coast of Norway and the North Pole, the doctoral research thus particularly focusses on the practices of temporary locals: the scientific researcher, the nature guide but also the artist. As experts, pathfinders and cultural producers they may be regarded as guiding figures, or mediators, who’s visual and narrative framings in and of the environment can be regarded as particular modes of embracing climate changes and in relation to a neo-colonial contemporary moment of global crisis in an Anthropocene Arctic. That is, in times characterized by climate changes, future access to large natural resources, complex economies of (in)visible information and accelerated data flows within global distribution networks, the mediation of the Arctic is part of an image politics where struggles of attention and access are deeply entangled. Central questions are therefor how artistic research may offer particular and valuable modes of exposing and engaging the material-discursive nature of the Arctic, and thereby the political and aesthetic implications of this ‘nature’. But also, how investigations of fieldpractices in their skilled and contextual dimension, can contribute an understanding of mediation as of something significantly different from representation.
