Workshops and technical resources

We strive to provide a workshop environment that attract and inspires in order to give students at Valand Academy the best conditions to experiment and develop their work.

As a programme student you have the opportunity to use all of the academy workshops, either independently or with the help of technicians and teachers. Several of the workshops are accessible around the clock, seven days a week.

We work continuously to update and develop our workshops, a process involving students, teachers and technicians.

WOOD WORKSHOP

This is where processes of wood, sawing, grinding, milling and turning are conducted.

METAL WORKSHOP

Processing of metal, there are various options for cutting, grinding, merging and forming sheets, tubes and profiles, for example by welding, shot blasting, milling and soldering. There is also a tool for forging.

"MURALEN"

Workshop dedicated to sculpture, this is the best place to cast in plaster like silicone, concrete or sculpt in clay.

"MONUMENTALEN"

This is a spacious hall with a crane and winch in the ceiling, compressed air and fume hoods. It is advisable to work with design of the sculptures, mounting frames, as well as painting and finishes of structures. The space is sometimes used for exhibitions and social events.

SPRAY BOX

The space functions for treatments that require fresh air ventilation, such as spraying, paint work and foam cutting.

PUBLISHING

This is the place to produce zines, books, posters, catalogues, etc. As a student, you have the possibility to get guidance of teachers or engineers in order to try out your ideas on the Xerox digital press. There is also equipment for bookbinding (binding and hard cover).

SOUND STUDIO

Studio with 5.1 (surround) sound for music and sound editing. The room is acoustically treated and calibrated for both music and film, and is interconnected with the paddle room for recording. There is the possibility to record both voice and instruments, and the space is equipped with Pro Tools, Adobe CC programs and plug-ins from Waves and Altiverb.

"TRAMPRUM"

Liten ljudstudio med fokus på inspelning av ljudeffekter (tramp). Akustiken i rummet är byggd för att motsvara inspelning utomhus, men kan användas för all sorts inspelning. På golvet finns "tramplådor" med olika underlag för inspelning av fotsteg för film, men kan även användas som ett separat inspelningsrum för Ljudstudion. Rummet kommer utrustat med Pro Tools och Adobe CC programmen.

VALAND CINEMA

Small sound studio with a focus on the recording sound effects (pedal). The acoustics in the room are built to meet recording outdoors, but can be used for any kind of recording. There are also "trampling boxes" with different surfaces for recording the footsteps of the movie, but can also be used as a separate recording room. The room is equipped with Pro Tools and Adobe CC programmes.

FILM STUDIO

The studio is connected to a shared kitchen, and serves as a venue for recordings, workshops and projects. The studio serves as a storage for technical equipment, making it possible to build scenery, working with green screens and stop motion.

GRADING

A place for color correction work and effects to moving images and photo. The room includes a calibrated 4K screen and the ability to work with ”Da Vinci Resolve”, and all Adobe CC programme. The room is equipped with a controller to Da Vinci, as well as PC and Mac computers.

VIDEO EDITING

Bookable rooms for video editing in Adobe Premiere. Each room is equipped with an iMac or Mac Pro, extra screen, speakers and monitor controls for audio. The computers are equipped with Adobe CC and Da Vinci resolve, but can also be used for other kinds of projects.

VIDEO EDITING/ LOG

There is a room for video editing with a focus on logging and digitizing older material. There is a strapper with Dvcam, Beta, VHS and DVCPRO and an older Steenbeck table for editing 16mm film.

PHOTO LAB COLOUR

A C41 developing machine for colour film making it possible to produce films intended for the C41 process in all formats up to 8x10. After an introductory course of about 3 hours, students are given access to evoke film herself/himself during opening hours.

Color Darkroom with 9 enlargers and film processing machine of the type Colenta that evokes the color paper designed for RA4 process. The machine can produce paper width up to 80 cm. For rolling paper handling there are cutting machine that cuts paper lengths according to input values. Enlarging equipment are both small-, medium and large formats. After treatment room for cutting and easier assembly work.

PHOTO LAB BLACK/WHITE

Traditional darkroom with 7-9 enlargers for film formats up to 13x18 cm. All processing is done manually in the film processor boxes and bowls for paper processing. There is also an a tool for after treatment available for viewing, rinsing, drying, etc.

PHOTO STUDIOS

The academy has two photo studios with studio flash equipment such as Pro Photo, light head, umbrellas, bouncers, different reflectors etc. The studio also has B-light and black and white backdrops of 2.70 m width.

DIGITAL IMAGE PRODUCTION

Retouching workstations, scanners for A4 and A3 formats, two Hasselblad Flextight for film scanning. The Epson large format inkjet printer allows paper rolls up to 64 "(160 cm) and plotter for vinyl.

3D WORKSHOP

3D printers with FMD technology materials PLA, ABS, PETG, etc. In this worksop you will also find equipment for 3D scanning and tools for finishing.

EQUIPMENT

As a programme student, you have the opportunity to borrow equipment for use within your education. The academy has a wide a range of cameras (analog and digital), equipment for video and audio recording, sound systems, projectors, media players, monitors, and more.
