Courses

Studies comprise 240 credits, corresponding to four years of full-time study. The programme consists of a course component of 60 credits and a dissertation component of 180 credits. The main aim of the course component is to introduce and develop the research practice of the artistic area and give the candidate a deeper, broader theoretical knowledge and schooling in methodology.

The course component is organised partly through obligatory foundation courses, seminars and conferences in a Research School run in collaboration with the other two institutions in the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts at the University of Gothenburg, and partly through obligatory doctoral seminars at the Valand Academy.

The dissertation component covers independent research and practice which is to lead to completion of a doctoral thesis. The programme leads to a Doctor of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy in Fine Arts. For more information, please read the respective general syllabus documents:
