For six months the artists have been working with the museum’s collections and staff to develop new art works that oscillate between the museum and the artist's individual practices.

– The exhibition title MELLANKOMST refers to what is involved in making an intervention in a museum, to come between and mix with things that are already in place. To depart from what feels important in the museum. It differs a lot from making a show in a white cube gallery, says Theodora Ekholm, Johan Melander and Cilla Berg, MFA students at Valand Academy

Themes of normativity, colonial heritage, transformation, labour, representation, ritual, and archive are explored with an inquisitive approach via works of sound, drawing, painting, sculpture, performance and video. The artists advocate for friction as a generator of warmth and energy, they say MELLANKOMST can be understood as a signal flare, illuminating the in-between and uncovering new stories.

– Each year we challenge our MFA students to develop art work for a place beyond the academy environment. It deliberately presents them with new contexts, new audiences and a set of really practical conditions to navigate – it’s a vital way to learn and to teach, says
Maddie Leach, Enhetschef in Fine Art, Valand Academy

Invited by the museum to produce an exhibition, it is understood these artists bring a different lens to the building, its site, what it contains and who visits it.

– We want other views on how our objects and exhibitions can be seen. We take a lot for granted in the museum and the students are coming in with new eyes, thoughts and reflections, says Göran Fors, Exhibition Producer, The Maritime Museum and Aquarium.
