How, why and for whom do we make, use and ‘read’ art exhibitions? To get a better understanding of these questions, in this freestanding course you will be given an opportunity to look at the history of exhibitions and their role in the development of contemporary art and society.
In particular, you will be given an opportunity to develop analytic and conceptual tools with which to make sense of the exhibition form and variations on the construction, dynamic and role of exhibition practices in contemporary art and its socio-political contexts.
Key issues we will address include: the development of the Biennale format; the emergence of the artist’s solo show as a standard model; changing conceptions and practices around the group exhibition; the development of curatorial practices in recent decades; and the proliferation of alternative platforms, distribution models and strategies for publication by artists.
The course includes excursions to contemporary exhibitions in Gothenburg where the students will have the opportunity to make practical use of terminology and historical knowledge of the art exhibition as form, and develop their critical reflection and response.
This course will be taught through Swedish and English.
