In this freestanding course (which is modeled on courses normally provided as part of our degree programme in Fine Art) you will be given an opportunity to learn about different aspects of the contemporary art system with particular reference to the construction of the art market, forms of publicity within the art system, different models of value and of value-discourse within contemporary art, and related forms of institutional critique.
The course draws upon recent research and activist work in the area of art organisation, artistic agency, the market system, self-organisation and the relationship of the contemporary art system to developments within contemporary capitalism, and changing geopolitics. You will learn about the development of the commercial art system from historical, theoretical and critical perspectives. Importantly you will also be given practical examples of art market practices, case-studies to consider in detail, as a means of better understanding the often obscure workings of the art system.
This course is informed by the current research of teachers and researchers at the Academy, including PARSE Prof. Andrea Phillips, PARSE prof. Dave Beech, Dr. Mick Wilson, Fredrik Svensk, and Jason Bowman (leader of the STRETCHED research project 2015-2017)
