Our international MFA in Fine Art supports you, as an artist, to critique, challenge and contribute to the contemporary world. In doing so you will determine the foundations for your future practice. You will develop methods to research, produce, navigate complex problems and situations and account for your judgments. We place emphasis on you being a strong communicator, critical thinker and advocate for the complexities of art practice.
You join a committed artistic and intellectual community dedicated to interrogating art, its conditions and potentials. Artists, curators and scholars with national and international profiles teach. The Academy’s research culture and collaborations with communities, institutions and projects locally in Gothenburg, nationally and transnationally inform our work.
Full-time. Two-years. Four terms: 60 credits each. Language: English.
Via lectures, seminars; personal tutoring, group and individual critique; collective and public projects the programme interrogates how artists may produce and practice and how their works may operate in differing public spheres. Study is supported by workspaces, technical support and access to equipment. We expect you to fully engage with the field of art and its debates and to be informed including through alterity. Our vibrant research culture, public programmes, networks and partnerships support a critical artistic and intellectual community. We are committed to you becoming a strong communicator and advocate for art, its potentials and discontents.
Year 1: Develop practice-based methods of enquiry, production and critique. Increase your capacity in theory and writing. Produce a collective public project in a given context.
Year 2: Progress artistic method and production, writing and theory practices. Submit an essay. Mount a large-scale public group exhibition. Determine your future.
Exams: Our exams are oral and written demonstrations of learning outcomes. They map your trajectory by discussing your enquiries and their contexts and engaging critical reflection to identify next steps. We give detailed feedback and respond to yours.
Valand Academy is a leader in practice-based PhDs for which this programme is preparatory. You will have access to the research culture of Valand. Our Faculty initiated PARSE- Platform for Artistic Research Sweden.
We do not believe there is a singular pathway for an artist, rather that artists can contour futures. Alumni have entered the commercial art world and been profiled in Biennial cultures; exhibited in gallery and museum contexts; initiated alternate platforms through self-organisation; developed art in community contexts but also become gallerists, organisers, activists, publishers, writers, researchers, educators, academics, curators, DJs and tattooists.
Degree of Master of Fine Arts, 120 hec.
We do not discriminate by media but welcome applicants who want to develop a rigorous command of art production, its discourses and conditions. We provide for studio and post-studio practices alike. You will want to contribute to a vibrant, intellectual, artistic and investigative educational environment.
Applications are assessed on your artistic investigations and methods; the desires described by your statement of intent and your dedication to increasing your command of Fine Art as an interrogative discipline. You should follow the guidelines precisely and clarify why this programme and Valand Academy is the right educational choice for you.
