Konstnärligt masterprogram i fri konst, 120 hp

Our international MFA in Fine Art supports you, as an artist, to critique, challenge and contribute to the contemporary world. In doing so you will determine the foundations for your future practice. You will develop methods to research and produce artworks, navigate complex situations and account for your decisions. We place emphasis on you being a strong communicator, critical thinker and an advocate for the challenges of contemporary art practice.

At Valand Academy you join a committed artistic and intellectual community dedicated to interrogating art practices and their communicative potential. We work with you to develop methods of analysing, conceptualising and making art.  Our students come from different backgrounds, cultural heritages and offer diverse perspectives on these challenges. Artists, educators and guests with national and international profiles teach within our programme and contribute to a vibrant research culture and public programme at the Academy. We continue to actively develop local, national and international partnerships with organisations to support our work and provide new opportunities for our students.

Full-time. Two-years. Four terms: 30 credits each. Language: English.

Content

The programme focuses on how artists define their aesthetic, ideological and ethical choices. Knowledge and skills are developed via lectures, across academy seminars, personal tutoring, group and individual critique; group and public projects. We expect you to engage with current debates and situations occurring in the world, and we ask you to navigate knowledge, opinions and perspectives that challenge your own. Your study is supported by access to shared learning spaces, technical support, equipment and specialist workspaces.

Year 1: Develop practice-based methods of inquiry, production and critical reasoning. Explore your production skills alongside theoretical analysis and writing. Produce a project in a given context in the public sphere.

Year 2:  Progress and define your artistic methods and production; refine your writing and critical skills. Submit an essay. Mount a public exhibition. Establish a direction for future artistic research.

Exams: Exams are oral, written and learning-focused. They map your development by assessing your methods, the contextual frame for your work, and your capacity to argue for these. We give feedback and respond to yours.

Continued studies and futures

We do not believe there is a singular pathway for an artist. Our alumni have entered the commercial art world; been invited to biennial exhibitions, public gallery and museum contexts; established self-organised exhibition platforms; made artworks within community contexts; become gallerists, organisers, activists, publishers, writers, researchers, educators, academics, curators, DJs and tattooists. The programme is also preparatory for study at Ph.D. level.

Degree

Admissions

Applications are assessed on your educational qualifications and capacity in English. Your previous artistic investigations and your statement of intent inform how we assess your commitment to developing your practice, and your interest in the programme offered at Valand Academy.

You will want to demonstrate a commitment to contributing to an intellectual, artistic and investigative educational environment and be dedicated to learning via group activity.
