At Valand Academy you can study Film, Photography, Fine Art and Literary Composition - where you can choose single-subject courses or degree programmes ranging from undergraduate to doctoral level.

Situated in the centre of Gothenburg, our department and the activities we pursue are an integral part of the city's cultural life. We are also extensively networked internationally with partners all over the world.

Valand Academy is one of the departments at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, which is Scandinavia's largest arts Faculty - offering a unique breadth of skills and competencies in artistic subjects.

Valand to merge with HDK

Valand Academy merging with our sister department, HDK Academy of Design and Crafts, in January 2020, is something you know already, right? And that's when we'll be forming a new department - and accommodating Design and Crafts too.



  • Valand Academy highlight artistic practice as a type of research

    [19 Oct 2018] Taking Place is a series of events organised and presented by artist-educators working in Fine Art at Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg. For two days a number of lectures and performances will highlight how processes and methods of research shape their individual works and their overall practices.

  • Call for Managing Editor for Our Many Europes

    [29 Aug 2018] The Valand Academy received an EU cultural bid for the period 2018-2022. The bid concerns the work of L'Internationale Online - a Museum network research initiative. The call for applications for the post of Managing Editor is now open.

  • Hiring a Postdoc for Research Project on Interwar Photographic Practic

    [28 Jun 2018] Valand Academy at the University of Gothenburg and the Hasselblad Foundation are looking for a person with a doctoral degree in photography or art history to fill a postdoc position. The postdoc will participate in a new research project aiming to find new ways to understand the interwar period based on contemporary photographic practices.
