About Maddie Leach

Maddie Leach is an artist, Senior Lecturer and Proprefekt (Deputy Head of Department) at Valand Academy, University of Gothenburg. She is also a candidate for PhD By Prior Publications at Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. Maddie arrived in Göteborg in March 2016 from Wellington, New Zealand where she was Programme Leader for the MFA and a founding staff member of Whiti o Rehua/The School of Art at Massey University.

Maddie's practice follows a research-intensive approach to develop conceptual trajectories and work through questions of materiality, process and public presentation with the aim of adapting and responding to local conditions. This way of working can be identified in many of her projects such as: The Grief Prophesy (2017) in Gothenburg Biennale for Contemporary Art; The Blue Spring/Mata Air Murni (2015) for Jakarta Biennale, Indonesia; 28th October 2834 (2015) for Spaced 2: Future Recall in Western Australia; her permanent installation Evening Echo in Shalom Park, Cork, Ireland (2011); Let us keep together for Iteration: Again, Tasmania (2011) and Signs and Wonders Shall Appear for Close Encounters, Chicago (2010). Each project has resolved itself differently in terms of their media, modes of presentation and public engagement, however all of them share a search for the peculiar local narratives and histories that Leach uses as entry points to compose projects that inhabit the space between what is expected and what happens, between potential and actual forms.

Maddie has worked with international curators Charles Esche, Claire Doherty, Hou Hanru, Nav Haq and Mercedes Vicente; Australian-based curators Blair French, Zara Stanhope and David Cross; and with New Zealand curators Christina Barton, Natasha Conland, Charlotte Huddelston, Abby Cunnane and Bruce Phillips. She has been an artist in residence with Serlachius Museums (Mänttä, Finland); CAG Field House Programme (Vancouver, Canada); National Sculpture Factory (Cork, Ireland); International Art Space (Western Australia); Spike Island (Bristol, UK) and Hyde Park Art Center (Chicago, USA).

Her current project Lowering Simon Fraser has been selected for the 2019 Project Anywhere platform and is commissioned by Contemporary Art Gallery (CAG) in Vancouver, Canada.
