Doctoral studies at Valand Academy are organised within the framework of artistic practice. This includes the previous media specific and genre sub-headings within a broad domain of artistic work.
The aim of the doctoral (third-cycle) education in artistic practice is for the practitioner to become proficiently educated, in both practice and theory, with a focus on the independent and critical creation of a knowledge base in the field covering both breadth and depth, practice and theory. The aim is also to expand the field’s dialogue with the outside society.
As a doctoral candidate you are a member of one of the units and you are expected to actively participate and collaborate with the programmes on Bachelor and Master levels. Therefore, the doctoral education is combined with teaching corresponding to 20% of the full-time position. This means a rate of study of 80% and a total period of education of five years.
The doctoral position demands a high degree of presence in the daily operations of the Valand Academy. A good knowledge of English is a prerequisite as Valand Academy operates in an international environment.
Valand Academy encourages its teachers and doctoral students to attend the University’s courses in teaching and learning in higher education (Högskolepedagogik) unless equivalent knowledge has already been acquired. The courses are conducted within institutional duties.
Valand Academy has 11 doctoral candidates and up until now, 20 candidates have graduated from the program.
