Welcome to this year's last edition of PUBLIC TALKS with the public presentation Direct Urbanism: The Role of Art and Artistic Strategies for Socially Engaged Urban Planning with transparadiso; Barbara Holub & Paul Rajakovics.

Barbara Holub and Paul Rajakovics will present their method of direct urbanism for a socially engaged and process-oriented urban planning, also showing selected projects and urban interventions involving art and artistic strategies on an equal level to conventional planning strategies.

They will discuss the function of art in the context of urban-societal issues: How can art maintain its critical voice contributing to a more just society addressing the current and complex issues like migration or shrinking cities? transparadiso questions a general request for participation by creating specific situations according to the context, presenting artistic-urbanistic strategies like the production of desires.

In 1999, artist Barbara Holub together with architect and urbanist Paul Rajakovics founded transparadiso as a transdisciplinary practice in between urbanism, art and architecture, between practice and theory.

transparadiso received the Schindler Grant, MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles (2004) and the Otto-Wagner-Award for Urban Planning (2007). Member of the editorial board of dérive Magazin for Urban Research, Vienna. Recent conferences, talks and workshops include: 4th Ural Industrial Biennial, Ekaterinburg/Russia (2017); The Bartlett, London (2017). Current projects: Quartier Bienvenue, Vienna; WoGen Quartiershaus - House of Cooperatives, Vienna; Times of Dilemma / Valletta18 Capital of Culture, Malta; Harbour for Cultures, Trieste.

BARBARA HOLUB was visiting artist and visiting professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (2014-2016). She lectures at the Vienna University of Technology, where she directed the research project Planning Unplanned (2010-2013); president of the Secession, Vienna (2006-2007); member of the jury/Public Art Lower Austria (2005-2007); member of the advisory board of World Council of Peoples for the UN, New York.

PAUL RAJAKOVICS was visiting professor at the Vienna University of Technology (2009-2017); visiting professor at IUAV/Venice (2018); head of the research project anders günstig exploring social-integrative models of housing for Lower Austria (2016-2017); co-consultant for architecture, Forum Stadtpark, Graz/A (1996); co-founded transbanana (1996-1999).
