Workshop
An international, interdisciplinary workshop hosted by the Department of Law, Gothenburg University in collaboration with the Department of History of Ideas, Gothenburg University, Valand Art Academy, Kent Law School, UK, and Melbourne Law School, Australia
The Fascism and the International Project is the collaborative outcome of a multi-year research project directed by Dr. Rose Parfitt (Senior Research Fellow, Melbourne Law School; Lecturer, Kent Law School). That project, entitled International Law and the Legacies of Fascist Internationalism, is funded by a Discovery Early Career Research Award (DECRA) of $337,000 AUD (2,150,000 SEK) from the Australian Research Council (Australia's most prestigious early career research grant, awarded across all disciplines) together with an Establishment Grant of $45,000 AUD (287,000 SEK) from Melbourne Law School (which is currently ranked seventh in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings).
The purpose of the collaboration is to find new ways of "getting at" the problem of fascism in order to generate more effective strategies of resistance to it. In organizing our conference in Gothenburg, we are getting at "the international" in the local urban setting, revisiting the ways in which fascism and anti-fascist protest is bundled up with the city's contemporary history and identity. The workshop is convened in a collaboration between Dr Parfitt (Kent Law School and Melbourne Law School), Dr Matilda Arvidsson (Department of Law, University of Gothenburg) and Dr Hjalmar Falk (Department of History of Ideas, University of Gothenburg) and our respective universities and departments as well as Valand Academy. We bring our individual areas of expertise to bear on the political and legal history of fascism as well as its expressions and prevalence in the present: in Gothenburg and beyond.
