New professor of film at Valand Academy

News: May 22, 2018

Internationally recognized filmmaker and researcher Jyoti Mistry is appointed professor of film at Academy Valand at the University of Gothenburg. Jyoti Mistry has many years of experience both from work with film education and with her own artistic activities.

Jyoti Mistry’s impulse is towards artistic research in film practices. Her current research explores cross cultural experiences anchored in filmic tropes that are responses to socio-politically and geo-economically framed questions of identity. She brings to this position experience in working with curriculum transformation, addressing diversity in pedagogies and advancing research in arts practices.

– We are incredibly pleased with the recruitment. Jyoti Mistry has a strong background as a filmmaker and artist combined with an experience as a teacher and researcher where her ability to strengthen and advance research within and through artistic practice is internationally recognized, says Klara Björk, Head of Unit at the film department at Academy Valand.

She is the 2016 CILECT International Teaching Award recipient which recognised her innovation in film education. In November 2017 she was visiting researcher at the Valand Academy film department and initiated an international exchange programme with Wits University in South Africa. As a part of the exchange, new pedagogical strategies and methods for teaching in film are being explored to allow for increased diversity, greater accessibility and concern in relation to the outside world.

– The opportunity to be part of Valand at this moment, brings with it a number of exciting possibilities. The merger with the Academy of Design and Crafts disciplines means that there will be space to explore more cross and interdisciplinary projects which will further advance and transform curriculum to enable greater diversity and inclusivity within arts education, Jyoti Mistry says.

Jyoti Mistry has been appointed as a professor of film. Ruben Östlund continues at the Valand Academy but in a new position as an artistic adviser.

– It is valuable for the school to have a close relationship with professional filmmakers with artistic activities at a high international level. With Jyoti Mistry and Ruben Östlund we have further strengthened our team, Klara Björk adds.

About the Film department at Valand Academy:

Studying film at Valand Academy is based on the idea that the camera and the image are tools that enable the study of humans and the world. The aim of film studies at the Academy is to develop filmic methods and enable new filmic forms of expression. Research on and with the camera as a tool for learning as well as education in this subject has been conducted for a number of years. From 2019 Valand Academy plans to train teachers who are to teach film pedagogy in practice, and work with film in schools and in the surrounding society as part of the Kulturskoleklivet involving the entire Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts. From the autumn of 2018, an international master's (second-cycle) programme in Film is to be launched.
