News: Nov 30, 2016

Valand Academy lecturer and researcher, Niclas Östlind and post-doctoral researcher in photography and human rights, Sarah Tuck will be presenting at the 4th International Conference of Photography & Theory (ICPT2016) in Nicosia, Cyprus from December 2 - 4. The conference focuses on the theme ‘Photography and the Everyday’.

Sarah Tuck’s paper ‘The Effect of Photo-Sharing Applications & Social Networks: Politics, revolutions and propaganda of photo-sharing. Drone Vision: Warfare, Surveillance and Activism’ will consider the ways in which drone technologies intensify the asymmetry of photographer and photographed subject, where the power to see and not be seen re-engages the politics of visibility within the field of human rights, and brings into play the ways in which drone technologies affect an understanding of the agency of images. About Sarah Tuck.

Niclas Östlind’s paper ‘Ordinary Life in the Centre of Attention: Thoughts on Documentary Photography between Activism and Voyeurism’ will compare and discuss how socially engaged photographers in the 1970:s and today have documented peoples every day life. There are considerable differences in approaches and how the works are mediated, and the paper will also explore the thin line between activism and voyeurism. About Niclas Östlind.
